The Tampa Bay Times

Red Snapper season is now open and this is the first weekend of red snapper fishing and spearfishing for 2022 in the Gulf of Mexico.  The first results are good.  Finding these fish is not hard.  You definitely need a boat.  Most of the red snappers, that are over the minimum size, are found on all types of structures in water 60’ to 70’ and deeper. Gag grouper season opened a couple weeks ago and these groupers are getting a little wary.  It’s been a couple weeks, so gag groupers got the memo, they are now harder to sneak upon.  Some nice size gags have been speared by our divers.  Out in the deeper water, over 150’, a couple over 40 pounds were weighed in last week.  Some big black groupers have been speared over the past couple weeks and they too were speared in depths over 150’.  If you’re like most anglers and divers, and have never seen big groupers, snappers, african pompano, and red snappers, you should try to visit the weigh-in for the 2022 Dive Care -Tampa Bay Spearfishing Challenge.  The weigh-in is today at Ferg’s Sportsbar in St. Petersburg, from 10:30am to 1pm.  This event is open to the public, it’s free to attend and there should be some big fish weighed at this event. If you’re there come say “hello” to me, I will be one of the speakers for the event.
