The past few weeks have delivered lots of cold air, dropping water temperatures in the gulf. Thermometers are reading in the low 60s. This is going to change a few things closer to shore. Anglers will find an absence of kingfish on many of the spots that were abundant only 12 days ago. Replacing the kingfish is some decent bottom fishing. You can have some fun targeting gag grouper before their season ends. The season remains open until the end of the month for the gags, so take advantage of the few days left. This week’s weather looks promising for a few days. Amberjack fishing is really good if you want catch and release . Right now they’re the biggest thing around to catch if you want some action that comes from a fish that really pulls. They seem to be on all the wrecks and are eager to grab a baited hook. As far as hog snapper fishing goes, there are some living on the same rocks. It’s best to bring shrimp or crabs. Be sure to bring plenty since all of the small reef fish loved each trip, so it’s easy to go through multiple dozens of shrimp in a matter of just an hour. Send the bait to the bottom and try to keep it laid there without movement. This tactic makes it harder for other small fish to find it. They’re quite timid and will wait their turn to come over and sniff your shrimp out of the bottom. Their sense of smell is quite amazing.
