The Tampa Bay Times

Trout fishing has been excellent in St. Joseph Sound over the last week. Several fish have migrated into the area and are eating soft plastics, sardines and shrimp. The regulations closing trout have allowed the stocks to be plentiful. As usual locating the groups of fish requires patience and subtle movements. Many times the school is only a few yards from where your bait is landing. Sometimes adjusting a few feet can get you within range. Trout and most fish are sensitive to the cold temperature changes common this time of year. I always use a dehooking tool to prevent handling of the fish and removing their slime which protects them through the cold winter months. Residential docks and canals have produced well also, when trying to hide from the high winds. Sheepshead, redfish, snook and trout will all inhabit these areas seeking shelter from the wind and also the darker muddy bottom will hold the heat from the sun.
