The Tampa Bay Times

Fishing conditions are changing rapidly. Extreme heat and lack of a consistent rain pattern are responsible for rising water temperatures in our region.

Early starts are a must for gathering bait for the day. Pilchards are most active just before sunrise. Chumming them to the boat with fish food in the first hour of light has been relatively easy. After sunrise it has been extremely difficult.

Redfish numbers are good in Tampa Bay. The fish are quick to get under the mangrove canopy to escape the heat and forage. Target mangrove points, paying attention to which side the current is pushing into has been a consistent pattern.

A few Tarpon are showing up in the upper bay. Slick calm conditions make locating rolling fish easy.  Cast plugs or fish the bottom with mullet, mackerel or jacks.
