The Tampa Bay Times

Last week’s big cold front brought water temperatures way down and took some already tough flats fishing and made it even tougher. Upper Tampa Bay water temperatures are in the low 70’s right now not exactly optimal for a wide-open bite. However, the recent warm up brings hope that we will soon be in the middle of some excellent fall fishing.

Redfish numbers appear to be on the rise. Seek out those flats that are protected from the wind, backwater areas and coves will warm up more quickly under the mid-day sun which is key for a good bite right now. Big afternoon high tides have the reds pushed under the mangrove canopy. Skipping fresh lady fish chunks or live chumming with pilchards will both produce fish.

Snook have slowed down a bit but will no doubt fire off again soon as they are feeling winter’s wrath bearing down. Creek mouths fished on a strong incoming tide will produce plenty of action later in the day.

Trout are around in Tampa Bay right now. They can be a bit hit or miss as they seem to travel in large groups. Look for them to be holding primarily along causeway rocks. Working along the rocks while bouncing soft plastics is much better way to locate the areas of fish. Once found multiple fish can be caught in the same area. Reminder trout limits have changed in our area and are now 3 fish per person 15 to 19 inches in length and only 1 fish over 19 inches per boat. Shore anglers may possess 1 fish over 19 inches in there 3 fish limit.
