Trout are hitting the right conditions. Our most prevalent species, it is easy to get into a good situation and catch a lot of trout. Slightly cooler temperatures mean more active large trout, a trend that will accelerate with every cold front. Cold fronts are on drawing near. The options for connecting on good action are the same as usual: the jig and the top-water lure. The jig is subsurface. I recommend ?-ounce jigheads and 5- or 6-inch jerkbait-style tails. Topwater lures are your choice. I like a green top and white belly, but other colors will get strikes. Target trout on grassy bottom areas. Currently, deeper grass is best. As winter arrives the biggest trout will move up very shallow and will be caught in a foot of water. Current regulations are four trout per angler. The slot is 15-20 inches. One of your four trout can be more than 20 inches.
