The extended red snapper recreational season is in full swing. Large schools of the tasty fish are scattered in the gulf, from south of Venice, Fla., all the way north to Venice, La. This past weekend we found them just west of St. Petersburg in depths from 80 to 170 feet. Most were in the 4-5 pound range, but intermingled with these snapper were the occasional 10-14 pounders. Getting a good shot on the larger ones can be difficult when diving over most of their range. Their neon red color fades at depth, and it’s there that their color turns to porcelain white. All divers see is the outline of the fish, all in white with a black eye staring back. These fish blend in with the sandy areas that surround the limestone ledges and hard-bottom potholes. The larger ones are curious enough for one pass within spear gun range, then they disappear into the sanctuary of the sand. Be ready for that quick opportunity. Many divers prefer to use a line shaft so they can shoot these snapper as they rise in the water column as the diver descends.
