Being a successful and safe angler this time of year often requires being an amateur meteorologist. Thunderstorms are always a concern, but as we move into the season of tropical systems, the threat is heightened. With today’s technologies, there are no excuses for getting caught off guard. Websites and apps can give detailed forecasts and radar activity for your location. Have a contingency plan when foul weather approaches. Know your escape routes and nearby points of safety. Bridges or covered boathouses may offer temporary protection, but getting to a nearby marina, park, waterfront restaurant or a friend’s house is much better. I’ve hunkered down inside the old fort on Egmont Key while a lightning storm passed. The best solution is to get off the water before these measures are necessary. Once the current frontal system passes, mangrove snapper fishing inside the bay should excel. The snapper have been very active, often rising to the surface to aggressively feed. Newly hatched baitfish found on shallow grass flats have been effective.
