A week of gag grouper fishing is ahead of us after a 5 month closer. If you have really good numbers an angler can get lucky at 12 feet but most fisherman will start around 18 to 25 feet. Live pinfish is the best bait. Mixed in with the structure will be some good mangrove snapper and a chance at cobia.  Back nearshore I’ve been catching trout and big black sea bass using 1/8 oz. jig in 8 to 12 feet of water. A technique I use is to cast the jig out behind the drift of your vessel and drag it along with the vessel. There has to be enough wind or tide to keep it moving along, every now and again give it a little lift of the rod tip. All the way back inshore we still enjoying some good redfishing using live pinfish and catching a few big trout in whats left of the rock grass on high tide.  This weekend is the 36 Annual Cobia Big Fish Tournament that will be held at Crumps Landing in Homosassa. Normally it’s at MacRaes of Homosassa but this year they decided to pass the torch. You don’t need to fish in the tournament in order to get in on the excitement come on down to Crumps Landing for the festivity’s. High incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.
