Offshore:
Hurricane Irma passed a little over five weeks ago and in the Islamorada area many things are getting back to normal. The Bluewater fishing for instance has been pretty good, especially for this time of year. The Kay K IV fished offshore recently and had a great day catching Dolphin at a mere twelve miles from shore. Captain Paul on the Reef Runner fished a half day last week and caught a few Tuna and Dolphin.
Reefs:
Reef action has been pretty good and should pick up as the weather cools down. The Captain Easy out of Post Card Inn did a number on the Mutton and Yellowtail Snapper and also caught Grouper. Many of the charters that were displaced from Post Card Inn are fishing out of Smugglers Cove Marina, so Call your Captain to see where to meet him. Look for Sailfish and King Mackerel to move into the area soon and for the Yellowtail Snapper to continue to please. Skiff guides will begin to patch fish in the shallow hard bottom areas just a mile or so from land. There will be a variety of Snapper and Grouper including Porgy and Hogfish caught in those 10 to 20 foot depths.
Gulf and Bay:
There have been a few reports from the Gulf and the catches seem to be great. There are lots of Mangrove Snapper and a fair number of Seatrout being caught buy jigging the area where the bay meets gulf. In the Gulf proper there have been some Spanish mackerel caught too. It seems a little early for the Spanish to have made the big move into our area, but regardless their numbers will increase with the passing of a few weeks.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
As for Flamingo, the ramps are open, but there are no service such as gas or bait and the ships store is closed for repair also. Captain Vinnie Biondoletti out of Bud and Mary’s Marina has been fishing the flamingo area and getting into some good action on Snook and catching some small Tarpon up in the mangroves. Closer to home, there have been some guides fishing the channels and getting hook ups on some big Tarpon. When drifting the channels always keep a small Blue Crab out under a float for either Tarpon or Permit.
