Offshore:
Offshore angling is pretty much confined to trolling feathers on the Islamorada hump or deep dropping for Snapper. The Hump has been fair to just ok with Tuna catches as the fish are from 4 to 8 pounds when the birds are actively showing the area the Tuna are feeding. Captain Don on the Kay K IV has been finding nice size Vermillion Snapper in the 600 foot depths using electric reels and multi hook rigs. The weather was nice last week with mostly light winds, but there age no Captains looking for Mahi in the Bluewater these days.
Reefs:
Captain Chris on the Doghouse released three Sailfish one trip last week. Captain Ed Yanetti captained a private boat last week and got a couple of Blackfin Tuna just off the reef and also released two Sailfish. Charter captains have been targeting King Mackerel and having good catches with the Kingfish ranging up to near thirty pounds. Captain Brian Cone on his Contagious out of Robbie’s Marina was in search of King Mackerel and when two rods went down simultaneously, the battle was on. The end result was a double header Wahoo. The supreme Mackerel, the Wahoo which is the top member of the mackerel family both weighed in at over thirty pounds.
Gulf and Bay:
With the calm seas there were lots of skiffs out on the Mackerel grounds. Captain John Gargan took his grandchildren out and the they had a ball chumming the mackerel into a frenzy. One can expect plenty of other players while chumming in the Gulf, such as Sharks, Cobia, ladyfish, Bluefish, Snapper and more. The water temperatures have risen into the mid seventies and the Mangrove and Lane Snapper have come alive. Remember the Snapper limit is ten per person daily of which only five can be Mangrove Snapper.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Captain Skip Neilson has been fishing the backcountry our west and doing a number on Tarpon. Captain Skip caught and released Tarpon on three trips last week. Also Captain Skip reported catching a hammerhead Shark that was estimated at “way over 200 pounds”. Captain Vinnie Biondoletti out of Bud and Mary’s Marina put his clients on some Redfish back in the Everglades National Park. Vinnie had the anglers casting live Shrimp on light spin gear.
