Offshore:
Once again, this past week has been very windy with the exception of two days early in the week. On the Islamorada Hump the Blackfin Tuna should respond to black and red feathers trolled way back behind the wash. Look for the birds dipping up and down and you will find the Tuna. Drag the feathers through the activity with out driving the boat through things and the Tuna should cooperate. There is always the possibility of the rogue Dolphin showing up, but the Mahi season is still a couple of months away.
Reefs:
Captains report that the Yellowtail Snapper action is good, but there are lots of Sharks present and it can be difficult to get as many Snapper to the boat. Also in the Yellowtail chum are Cero mackerel. Captain Benny Spaulding fished early in the week and released two Sailfish on his Playbaby charter boat. The Gold Reserve out of Whale Harbor Marina had a catch that consisted of Sailfish, Tuna, Cero Mackerel and Snapper. The Captain Michael party boat out of Robbie’s marina had a great day with lots of King Mackerel. Captain Don Chittick on the Kay k IV was on the reef and had a kite up with a Blue Runner for bait and caught a Wahoo via the kite. There have been many skiff guides on the oceanside when the wind allows with good catches of Snapper, Grouper, Jacks, Porgy, Hogfish and Mackerel.
Gulf and Bay:
The Spanish Mackerel action is off and on as it has been all season. There are some good catches of mackerel reported every day. There has been great action with Mangrove and Lane Snapper also. Look for Cobia and Tripletail when in the Gulf. Up in the grassy areas of Florida Bay there have been some backcountry guides catching Trout and Snapper by bouncing jigs tipped with Shrimp or with Gulp baits attached.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
With all the wind the Flamingo area water was quite off color. There were some skinny water guides up on the Flamingo flats and having good results with Snook and a few Redfish. Most took the run to the Cape Sable area. With a well full of Shrimp and Pinfish there were plenty of Snook brought to boat side. Also, in play were Black Drum and Sheepshead. The month of February is known for the Drum and Sheepshead action, so it should continue for some time to come. Captain Skip Neilson fished the Cape and got into some great Snook action. Captain Lou Brubaker also fished the Cape and caught Snook and had a juvenile Goliath Grouper eat a Pinfish that took forever to reel in, thinking they had the mother of all Snook.
