Offshore:
Offshore action has been great. It is the time of season that the Mahi get scarce, but the Blackfin Tuna take up the slack nicely. Last week the Sharks on the Hump were eating lots of hooked Tuna. This week it is a different story. The Tuna are eating trolled lures and live bait. Captain Rob on the Southern Comfort reports catching 18 Tuna while drifting live Cigar Minnows on the Islamorada Hump. Rob happily reported there were no Sharks present. Otherwise, the Indigenous dropped for Swordfish in the deep and boated two.
Reefs:
The Vera Vita captained by Billy Chrisman had a great day on the reef with King Mackerel, Cobia and one huge Yellowtail Snapper that rose from the depths to inhale a live bait. The Cobia have been showing up and some big ones as proven by the crew on the Kay K IV, as they boated one Cobia at 51 pounds. Captain Rob on the Southern Comfort released a Sailfish after fishing the Hump. A couple of charters have reported catching African Pompano too. Bay Boat guides are fishing inside the reef and getting into Grouper, a variety of Snapper, Hogfish, Cero Mackerel, Porgy and more. Note, Hogfish season is closed from October 31 to May 1.
Gulf and Bay:
The Spanish Mackerel are on fire in the Gulf. Chumming and casting jigs with a soft tail or Shrimp gets the job done. Captain Tim Klein and Captain Vinnie Biondoletti both report lots of Tripletail in the Gulf. Running along the trap lines and finding the Tripletail laying next to a buoy with the next step to present a Shrimp in front of the Tripletail. Some cast a bare troll rite, and some use a float to maneuver the bait to the fish. Note: always carry a landing net for the Tripletail as they are sharp and spiny to the touch.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Captain Skip Neilson fished the Backcountry and reported absolutely sensational action on the Redfish. There were a few Snook caught during the Redfish Melee’ also. Captain Jeremy out of Whale Harbor Marina fished Flamingo and got Snook, Redfish, Trout and Snapper. Baits of choice were live Shrimp and Pinfish or Pilchards. Closer to home, Captain Billy on the Vera Vita fished the Whale harbor Channel one evening and caught and released a Bull Shark estimated at 250 pounds.
