Offshore:
Nope, not yet. No indication of any Bluewater Dolphin migration this past week. There are a few caught on the reef every week by captains slow trolling baits usually in less than 200 feet. The Islamorada Hump has been giving up some good catches of Blackfin Tuna though. The Tuna are being trolled up with small feathers way back behind the boat wash.
Reefs:
Reef action has been very good with a wide variety of species being caught. The Vera Vita and the Kay K IV have both been getting into the Yellowtail Snapper, Muttons and King Mackerel and on the Vera Vita they released a NICE Black Grouper. The Phoebe 2 out of Post Card Inn had a half day on the reef and pounded the Yellowtail Snapper. Captain Chuck on the Dee Cee made a rare catch of a 40 pound Mako Shark while catching King mackerel and Bonito. Captain Gary on the Take Down released two Sailfish early in the week. A few bay boat captains fished the shallow oceanside and got into Snapper, Grouper, Hogfish, Cero Mackerel, Porgy and Pompano.
Gulf and Bay:
Mackerel are still present in the Gulf, invading chum slicks and hitting jigs tipped with shrimp. There are Snapper and a few Pompano in the frenzy also. In the upper Florida bay, the Seatrout bite is good. The Trout are being found in white Mullet muds within sight of the mainland shoreline. Captain John on the Couple a Bucks has been hitting the Trout and Snapper in that area all week and doing great.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
The Snook and Redfish action has tempered from the mad dog action the last three months. But, do not despair, as the fish are still doing well in the Flamingo and Cape Sable areas. Captain Vinnie out of Bud and Mary’s Marina found a big bunch of Reds mid week and went through lots of Shrimp during an hour of casting baits in a falling tide. Captain Tim Klein had a nice day with Snook, Redfish and one Tripletail. Captain Freddie out of Smugglers Marina at the Snake Creek Drawbridge was in Flamingo and released Snook and one angry Sawfish.
