It is peak time for catching large numbers of trout. A “spring thing” right now, it is not unusual to put up a big number with a number of quality-sized fish being caught. This should continue for another two months. For tackle and techniques, trout are easy if you are in the right location. The big variable: Are they feeding well? If they are feeding strong, it is nothing to catch 100 trout consecutively. When the trout are not aggressive, more finesse is required. Creep lures slowly to connect with moody trout. Use light tackle, light leader and light lures. I like 5- to 6-inch jerkbait-style tails to attract the largest trout. It is reaching a perfect time of year to throw topwater lures to large trout. This fishery is strong and is ready to be enjoyed by all who fish Tampa Bay.
