The Tampa Bay Times

It might be a bit premature to think that spring has sprung here in west central Florida, however we are warming up nicely and it really feels good!

Water temperatures are still cool for fish to be feeding heavy. However, we did see a nice increase in the water temperature last week that showed us a glimpse of things to come. Weekend cold fronts seem to be the pattern this year so just like last week it looks like it’s going to be a mid-week bite again coming up.

Redfish are still primary targets as we continue to see the numbers increasing in both Tampa Bay and the intercoastal waterway. Schools of mullet have made their way back to the shallow flats of the Intercoastal waterway. It’s these schools of mullet that are a dead give away on where to fish. Cast gold spoons and or weedless soft plastics through the mullet schools to get bit.

The afternoon live bait bite showed positive signs late last week in upper Tampa Bay. Late day water temperatures reached the mid-70’s, enough to get the snook to poke their heads out of the creeks. Along with the snook we had some redfish and jack crevalle mixed in. Its these afternoon bites that will be looking for over the next couple of months.

Pilchards can be found holding in deeper water along the bay bridges as well as grass flats in the middle portion  of the bay.
