Gag grouper season has been running strong for divers.  Our breath-hold divers have been doing very well in the shallower waters, especially north of Clearwater, Florida.  Hunting the wary gag groupers without the noisy bubbles of Scuba, help the freedivers to get closer to these groupers.  Gag groupers are notoriously known for their elusive tactics.  With just a hint of trouble, the gag will smoothly move away from the structure out into the sand and turn pale white.  They blend in with the sank perfectly.  In fact, when one of our diver’s returned from a rocky area with a successful stringer of gags and we re-dive the spot, we look in the sand first for gags.  We swim away from the structure out into the sand and then slowly move out away from the structure and then parallel to the structure, and then back toward the structure.  As we swim back to the structure, over the sand, we keep a careful eye in front of us for gags that are trying to blend in with the bottom.  If we are a little lucky and very aware, we can get a good shot off before the gags see us. Red snapper season is open until August 2nd.  Many divers and fishermen have be hitting their favorite red snapper locations and they have been doing well.  Fishermen are searching for the right time to catch the snapper bite and our spearfishermen are finding the right time to spear is almost anytime.
