Summer is the time to get the kids out on the water for some fun family fishing.  Outings should be planned with age appropriate expectations and skill level considerations.  My favorite approach to this style of fishing is to anchor over natural limestone outcroppings where a variety of species can be caught.  I begin by deploying a frozen chum block off a transom cleat to draw fish in from a distance.  Next, two rods are set in the rod holders with live baits swimming freely in the chum slick.  The final step is to drop baits to the bottom with the least amount of weight possible.  By covering the entire water column the chances of catching multiple species is greatly increased raising the fun-factor up a notch for the kids.  The surface rods typically catch Spanish mackerel while the bottom species have included mangrove snapper and sea bass.  A bonus this time of year is the small sharks that may show up at any time.  Children enjoy catching sharks.  I try to use the moment as an educational tool to discuss their unique features and value to the eco system while making sure all are released quickly and healthy.
