The Tampa Bay Times

May was a great month for fishing offshore. Numerous pelagic fish showed up behind our boat on many occasions. Kingfish were the most common  fish that we landed. They were eating our freelined sardines and blue runners with a fury this past week. We also landed barracuda, sharks, amberjacks and some blackfin tuna. Expect this  great action to keep taking place all the way into June and July. Gag grouper  season opens up June 1st allowing for even more offshore action for anglers. We have been finding few of these tasty bottom fish at many depths of water this past month.    Large bull sharks were devouring many of the amberjacks we hooked last week.  This is a true sign of summer, when you witness 300 plus pound bull sharks loitering around the wrecks on a daily basis. They are opportunistic and quite dangerous at times. We literally had the big shark bite the propeller in an angry fashion, while we had it hooked up on a line. Its quite amazing to see a fish with such a nasty attitude. We had at least 20 amber jacks eaten while we were  trying to land them. We targeted  wrecks in 40 to 80 feet of water.   Most of the bigger sharks weighing over 300 lbs were  found around the wrecks we fished about twenty miles from shore.   The shallower water wrecks,  had a variety of different sized sharks both small and large . All depths had abundant numbers. We also witnessed a few large hammerhead sharks this past few weeks at the deeper locations. They were  eating  more than just our amberjacks and barracuda.  A few 4 foot sharks  became dinner for these larger sharks.  We estimated their weights at over 1000 pounds.
