The Tampa Bay Times

Snook are beginning to emerge from their deep back country wintering haunts to creek mouths and near by grass flats.

Although water temperatures are a bit cool for an early morning snook bite, mid-morning to late afternoon has been red hot. Focusing primarily on the incoming tide, follow the water onto the flats and make your way to mangrove points and creek entrances.

Live bait, specifically pilchards is the best way to fire the fish up. Look for the schools of pilchards to be holding in deep water near the bridges and many of the range markers in Tampa Bay. Deep water cast nets are necessary to capture the bait especially if there’s a lot of current.

Redfish are also getting more comfortable out on the open flats. If your fortunate enough to find a mullet school give it a look as there’s sure to be some redfish following. Otherwise pushing the boat in as shallow as possible at the start of the incoming tide and slowly introduce live pilchards into your area. The key is to attract as little attention as possible from the flocks of terns. I you spot a fish reacting to your chum, stay put and be patient the fish will eventually feel comfortable enough to start eating around the boat.
