The Tampa Bay Times

Just as fishing conditions were becoming stagnant our normal summer rain pattern has kicked in.

Soaking rains over the past week are exactly what we needed to help regulate soaring water temperatures.

Upper bay redfish, snook and Jack crevalle have been feeding well the first few hours of the day. Targeting creek outflows and other areas that tend to see a lot of rain water runoff has been the pattern the past several days.

Catching bait for the day can be tough unless your at your bait spot and chumming while it’s still dark.

Look for the bait to be holding in two to three feet of water over grassy areas primary south of Gandy bridge.  Also use caution when loading your livewell with bait right now. Oxygen is key for keeping your baits healthy in warm water, too many baits can compromise them all.

Tarpon continue to show up in the backwaters and mid-morning slick off conditions are the time to locate them.  Deeper areas around the bay bridges are likely holding spots for the larger fish, and canals often are good areas to check for juveniles
