If the forecast is correct, we will finally have cooler weather, with water temperatures in the 70s. Fishing is always better when water temperatures teeter in the low 70s for spring and fall runs. Cold fronts will usher in lots of wind with cold air. This combination should help break up the Red Tide along our coastline. Expect to see more kingfish action this month. We have finally started to spot decent schools of threadfin herrings, Spanish sardines and blue runners. A few kingfish have been landed around these schools. Numerous schools of Spanish mackerel have been available for a few weeks. They are working schools of small baitfish a few miles from shore. The key to knowing what size the baitfish are at certain locations is to watch the sea birds. Smaller terns will normally follow the juvenile baitfish when mackerel and other fish are eating them. They will be seen hovering close to the water trying to grab the frantic minnows chased to the surface by the mackerel. Pelicans and gannets are larger birds that you can see dive down into bigger schools of baitfish. The higher these big birds dive, the larger the bait are below.
