King mackerel will be the object of considerable attention as they migrate from south to north during the spring. They are the target of many anglers during the numerous fishing tournaments around the Pinellas Suncoast. With prize money in the tens of thousands of dollars, several of the tournaments attract anglers from all across the fishing community, including from other states. All you have to do is catch a kingfish bigger than the other contestants to take home a huge check. It sounds easy, doesn’t it? At times it is. It doesn’t hurt to have a little local knowledge. Knowing where to find bait is perhaps most important to finding the fish. Also, understanding the habits of the fish will help. Following the solunar movements can also be useful. Solunar charts mark the time of day when nature’s inhabitants are the most active, and that includes fish. One can only hope for fair weather, being in the right place at the right time and a lot of luck. Remember; success follows effort.
