Looking at a windy week ahead that may keep most anglers from heading offshore and even putting the kabush on hitting the flats for some trout fishing. On the Big Bend there are a few tricks to keep you fishing safely even in the wind. Sheltered bays that have some sort of wind block like the St. Martins Keys can get you into a few trout if you use a sea anchor or drag a bucket to slow your vessel down. Another man made structure that offers shelter from a north wind is the Spoil Banks out of Crystal River fishing. The area around Tin Pan Gap would be a good choice during this week’s wind. The best bait is a popping cork with a jig, big pop’s with the corks will get the bite in the rough conditions.  Another safe place to fish is in our rivers. Use live shrimp to catch mangrove snappers, sheepshead and black drum. Look for deep holes and rocky points near channel edges on the outgoing tides. Casting glow MirrOlure or D.O.A. soft plastics with a chartreuse 1/8 oz. jig head around docks, rocks and heavy cover can put you on a snook that has moved up river from the cooling Gulf waters. High incoming tide will be in the morning this weekend. W
