Things came around right on schedule for the year. Pompano went from good to better to best to start July. We have had some of the best pompano fishing trips I have ever seen. The numbers and the size of pompano have increased significantly in the past few weeks. Catching pompano is easy if you know what you are doing. Like most fishing, it is about location. Get in the right spot and pompano fishing is fairly easy. I have not used a natural bait for pompano in almost to 20 years. It isn’t necessary. I recommend the pompano jig and teaser. Loop-knotted together, this rig catches a wide variety of species, but it is all that is needed to catch pompano. Pompano are found at the bridges, passes and deep areas with sand bottom and current. Make sure your pompano rig is bumping the bottom. The act of jigging sets the hook. Pompano have an excellent fight, and they are among the best eating fish throughout the state. Pompano are the easiest fish to fillet. You may keep six pompano, minimum length 11 inches. I do not keep pompano until they get to 13 inches.
