Offshore:
There were just a few days this past week calm enough for anyone to make the run offshore to the Islamorada Hump, as a Front pushed through the area providing strong gusty winds. The Tuna bite was on and several charter boats caught all the Blackfin they needed. The captains got live baits back near the reef and chummed the Tuna into a frenzy. There were some Sharks in the picture and some Tuna were taken by them.
Reefs:
This past week was the 54th Islamorada Juniors Sailfish Tournament. The Sailfish action was outstanding. The top three boats were: Carib Sea 14 releases. Last Dance 8 releases. Contagious 8 releases. There was a 70 pound Wahoo brought to gaff by one boat fishing the tournament. Beyond that, charter boat catches were a mix of Sailfish, King Mackerel, Tuna, Bonito, Dolphin and a variety of Snapper.
Gulf and Bay:
Bay boats and skiffs alike ran to the Gulf to target the Spanish mackerel. There were catches of Trout, Snapper, Jacks, ladyfish, Cobia, Tripletail and more to be had. The front rolled through and that put an end to fishing the gulf as winds blew 20 to 25 with higher gusts. Many backcountry guides postponed trips for a few days then the weather got nice again.
Flats, Backcountry and Flamingo:
Still the action on Redfish and Snook was pretty great. Captain Freddie out of Smugglers Cove sent a report that a livewell full of Shrimp was all it took to provide some great action in Flamingo. Snook, Redfish, Trout, Snapper and one baby Tarpon all feasted on the live Shrimp.
