Normally this time of year my attention turns to the beaches, focusing on migratory species headed our way such as Spanish mackerel and kingfish. With our current Red Tide situation, my thoughts are still on the beach. Mostly, how to avoid it. Now is the time to head to the bay. Exploring areas that have not been targeted in a while might reveal fish that are trapped by the Red Tide creeping into our passes and Intracoastal Waterway. My thoughts also drift back to the severe outbreak of 2005 when I was forced to venture outside my normal stomping grounds to find clean water and cooperative fish. It was worth the effort to run further than usual and catch fish. Just because some areas have been affected by Red Tide doesn’t mean everywhere has. Use this natural-occurring phenomenon to get outside your comfort zone and learn something new.
