  • Jigging for big black drum this time of year is pretty easy. Drum up to 90 pounds are frequent, and 60-70 pounds is common. It’s not often you can target something this large in Tampa Bay. Giant fish do not always require heavy tackle. This is a perfect example. We catch them on the same equipment we use to catch trout. Technique is key: Can you drag these fish away from the bridges? It is best to use a slightly heavier rod. A section of 20- to 25-pound fluorocarbon leader helps. Lures that work well include an assortment of “pompano jigs.” Go with yellow for the lure and a generic pink teaser fly for the jig. But nearly any teaser will do as long as it has some flash in it. Drop the jig and teaser right next to a bridge structure. Lift it, let it drop and continue until the rod doubles over.
