The Tampa Bay Times

Overcast days with windy and unpredictable weather can be the norm this time of year. Saltwater fly fishers seem to be more affected than conventional types and we tend to think that the days ahead of us have to get better. A log that records every previous trip is extremely useful and something I highly recommend for all serious fly fishers. I have an old hardback composition book that I have used for years. The day of the week, date, tide, water temperature, weather conditions including wind direction and speed, areas fished, boat traffic, location of cooperative fish and types, depth, and successful flies should all be included. Reviewing several similar days from previous years will give me a pattern that I can plan in the evening or morning before leaving home. It helps determine where I will pick up a client so we can start fishing within a few minutes. I often ask clients if they have fished with other guides. A frequent response is how much time was wasted running all over the place looking for better spots or bait. Most clients want to learn positive things from their experience, often wanting to do some fishing on their own or with friends while visiting our area.
