Choosing days to fish has been difficult recently. Wind has been more of a concern than rain in the forecasts.  Finding success in these conditions requires a knowledge base that takes time on the water to develop.  I’ve relied on small-secluded wrecks, jagged limestone outcroppings along protected channel edges, and long forgotten artificial reefs to provide a variety of different species.  Cast netting bait has remained relatively easy on shallow protected grass flats, however the mucky “gumbo weeds” have wreaked havoc on my drains and completely slimed the boat deck.  Scaled sardines, Spanish sardines, threadfin herring, and pinfish have all gone into the well.  Our catches have included Spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, sea bass, flounder, white grunts, and more.  On one particularly windy day we opted to stop and buy shrimp for our bait and were rewarded with large sheepshead which I’m sure were positioning themselves for the afternoon flush of small crabs with the strong outgoing tides.
