As water temperatures continue to climb, more and more permit are showing up on wrecks and ledges off the Suncoast area. These highly prized members of the jack family appear every spring and gather into large aggregations for spawning. Most of this takes place under the nose of fishermen who have no idea that they are even there. They are rarely caught by accident because they bite in the upper water column feed almost exclusively on crustaceans. To target them directly, you must have a specific rig, be in the right spot, and most importantly use a specific bait — a small swimming crab such as a blue crab or pass crab. North of Clearwater, securing a few dozen live crabs can be the most difficult part. Few tackle shops carry them and there are no narrow inlets that produce large crabs flushes here. We usually walk the shorelines at low tide with a net and dip crabs off the bottom. Permit are on most wrecks from 50 to 100 feet of water off the Suncoast, but some are better than others.
